Turn, Turn, Turn...

Over two decades ago, Dad and I piled into the Camaro and took off up Airport Road. I don't remember what the place was called (Happy Valley?) and officially became the first Schur's in recorded history to go downhill skiing. This place was a glorified speedbump with a rope tow, and a T-Bar. As I recall we somehow learned how to snowplow, and even braved the scary looking T-Bar a few times. I think I developed a deep seated fear of T-Bars on that visit, and tended to stick to chairlifts ever after.

This Friday the tradition passes on. I am taking Abby to the hyperbolically named "Grand Geneva Resort" in Wisconsin (Vertical drop 211ft, 18 trails. ) .Pictures will be posted.

It was called Hockley Valley. I think it was December 1977, more like three decades.

Seems like yesterday. Apt description,

We joined Devils Glen in early 1978. Great skiing memories. Chicken runs down Paradise.

Remember May Lou's motel in Singhampton with the snow coming in under the door? The live Lamb in the bar.

Remember the Hofflecar in Innsbruck? And Sweinschnitzel at The Golden Adler Restaurant? Bunderfleisch buried in snow.

The Ptarmigan mountain at Lake Louise?

The Sun Bowl at Sunshine?

Blackcomb at Whistler?

The dreadful Whiteface Mountain at Lake Placid? The bobsled run, skating on the Olympic rink with Elliott.

Great times. We will do a mini one next month.

Maybe next year we could do a whole gang condo in Collingwood?

I am so delighted that you are bringing Abby into the world of ski-bunny hood. It is an important step into her world of being a girl. It's most important that her hat match her suit - you know this Dad!
Can't wait to see the pictures. As Dad said maybe next year we can all shack up in some miniature condo and drink wine.
I still cannot get the chocolate (it was called by other colours) brown snowsuit out of my mind...it's back in fashion now!

the babyshit suit was Elliot. I don't think her ever replaced it

We'll see how Abby likes it....just wearing whatever is in the closet this time.

Ptarmigan was a great spot. The chilli in that restaurant was amazing. Remember those Chutes? Basically avalanches with a Black Diamond sign.

Norquay? Stupid spot. Exceeded only by Taos in Xtreemness

-69 at Whiteface.....coldest I have ever been...actually no, NYC when we went out to buy winter clothing. THAT was the coldest I've ever been.
