A Thought on Father's

Last night I was helping my eldest son with his homework. His assignment involved writing various forms of poetry. I must say he is quite the poet at 12 already. The final poem was a certain form called a Diamante (See definition here) which starts with a noun or subject of which he chose “Mom” ( I think he was trying to suck up to me, but I’ll take it as long as I can get it!) My story relates to the second line in his poem where he chose two adjectives to describe “Mom”. He chose fun and trustworthy and I almost wept. It was the nicest compliment I had received from my son ever. What a wonderful thing to be thought of: trustworthy.

Which comes to my own post dedicated to fathers (specifically my own)….I thought after putting the kids to sleep, snuggling with the dogs and picking up laundry what would I write if I had to write a Diamante about fathers. Perhaps I am not the poet my twelve year old is, but my sentiments come from my heart.

Fathers
Trustworthy, Fun
Loving, Caring, Forgiving
Daredevil, Courageous, Passionate, Effusive
Daring, Encouraging, Challenging
Enthusiastic, Compassionate
Guardian

It may not be a small note in a briefcase or a coupon for a free hug, but it is a hand reaching out to say “I love you Dad, Happy Fathers Day” and it reaches out to my dear brother who is the father of girls and says - "we love our Dads" even if it seems we are only asking for more gummy bears than hugs!

It is very easy to be a father to two great children.

Encouraged by a loving wife and occasional Shih Tzu, I have had no greater joy on this planet than watching the two of you grow up. Both with enourmous pride, but with great admiration as you indulge in the joy of parenting. No easy task.

You have both done a far better job than I of bringing up your children.

Having never had a grandparent, I had no idea what unadulterated fun unrestricted love there could be between a grandparent and a grandchild.

But it is really only with the encouragement and permission of two wondeful children that this can take place. You have created the envoronment for this enjoyment and I am very grateful for that.

I think about the unfortunate children and parents who do not have this complete relationship. Who bicker and play no speaks with each other. And I count myself very fortunate to have the entire family I have.

There is no greater gift I could have asked for on father's day.

Thank you both.
