Back to the future-or-Never burn a bridge

In 1969, just before Cindy was born, I joined JWT in Cape Town. I gave up my company car and we bough a second hand LH Drive VW with a half a clutch. I remember borrowing the JWT Ford Escort station wagon to take Mom to the Booth Memorial hospital and again to fetch Cindy and Mom. When I applied for the job, Asst A/E on exciting Pepsi, I was rejected for lack of experience. But they said I could work on the boring Old Mutual Insurance account which had given JWT 90 days notice, and if they kept it they would keep me. Young and foolish, I took the job and the risk. We kept OM and they gave me all the booze business at Sedgwick, which was bought later by SFW, Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery. 6 months later they fired the Pepsi guy and gave me his Account Executive job handling Pepsi which was based in JHB. Within a year they transferred me to JWT as a senior Account Executive. There they gave me the Beecham new business assignment which I had begun working on in CT. We got the Beecham a...

Freaky Friday

My first battle was to check in online and book a seat on the Thursday, the night before the BA flight to Paris. It let me do mine on a BA mileage freebie but would not do it for Lucille. After many calls an AA person told me that because BA had booked an AA flight, (something I had no idea about), I would have to check in at JFK and the mere thought was the beginning of a nightmare. I should have known it was going to get worse when Lucille’s luggage was 6lbs over and the check in clerk wanted $60.00 for it. The fact that mine was 20 lbs under did not impress him. So out came the credit card, which began to add costs and complications to a trip booked a long time ago. Lucille and I have traveled all over the world, but this trip was to meet friends, neighbors from CT in Derbyshire where they had arranged to christen their son, Stevie. We had decided that as we were traveling to Europe we would go on to France and spend time in our favorite place, Theole Sur Mer, just outside Cannes. T...

Tim comes to town

Tim is here, all 6'1" of him, a virtual eating machine. Said hello to New York with a midnight street hot dog chased by a Baconator from Wendy's for the car home. Followed by a mound of Indian food at the mandatory Coramandel first night.(Followed by the usual breakfast of my leftover curry). 20 Crabs at the crabfest while sucking on a Long Island Iced Tea following a picnic and a couple of beers. Record amounts of fried Calamari and Japanese Tempura. Gallons of multicolored liquids consumed without visibly swallowing. Love every minute of time with this accomplished young man nicknamed "Jeeves" as he chauffeurs us everywhere.

I've never met a Shwarma I didn't like!

It's true ~ I've never met a shwarma that didn't taste delicious. I'm sure once I roll myself back into the office I could find all sorts of cool links and background on the origins of a shwarma. I'm almost positive there'll be a wiki on it too! I'm not sure if it's the combination of chicken & veggies or the famous drizzle of tahini sauce at the end that makes every bite amazing. Have you ever tried to re-create one at home? I'm positive my brother has and probably has some pretty good suggestions. He's an incredible chef working as an under cover computer enthusiast! So I dedicate this day to shwarma lovers around the world. Happy tahini to you! -- Post From My iPhone

What not to mummy

Testing out this iPhone blogger application and I'm struck with the concept that there should be a reality show for overbearing mothers entitled "What not to Mummy" Each week they would profile some the worst overbearing mothers and teach them how to lighten up a little and let their kids grow up already.
